Many variables come into play to impact whether a sports card or a sports card product is hot or if that same card or product will be cold. These variables include what players, inserts, and/or rookie cards are within the product.
Meanwhile for individual sports cards it comes down to how well that player is performing, whether that player has a chance to continue to build on their success or struggles, and/or if that player is hurt or struggling. Here are a few variables impacting the hottest sports cards of January 2023.
When it comes to sports cards playoffs can play a key role in driving up sports card values while also allowing a few sleeper sports cards to see some interest. Over the past month players such as Justin Jefferson, Joe Burrow, Patrick Mahomes, and Josh Allen have all seen additional interest with their teams playing in the NFL Playoffs. Meanwhile with the Super Bowl just around the corner football cards will remain hot for the next few weeks.
Another variable impacting sports cards values and interest in baseball cards is the approach of the 2023 MLB Spring Training being just around the corner. While the 2022 MLB Season was exciting, the next season drives the hype of top tier stars such as Bryce Harper, Mike Trout, Aaron Judge, Vladimir Guerrero Jr, and even the return of Fernando Tatis Jr.
Brock Purdy may be the hottest sports card on the market as he continues to showcase solid play on the football field while guiding the San Francisco 49ers to the NFC Championship Game. Now Brock Purdy will lead his 49ers against Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles in what looks to be a stellar NFC Championship Game. Nonetheless as long as the 49ers keep winning and Purdy is under center his cards will remain hot.
Anytime a new product is released that fans are looking forward it plays a key role in the interest of the current rookie class. This can be said for a few of the leagues around including the NBA which recently saw the release of 2022-23 NBA Hoops by Panini while the NHL has seen the release of 2021-22 Skybox Metal Universe while the NFL has seen multiple new releases. These 2022 NFL Sports Card releases include 2022 Panini XR Football, 2022 Panini Impeccable Football, and 2022 Panini Spectra.
With no further do here is our list of the Hottest Sports Cards of January 2023.
Landing at the top of our Hottest Sports Cards list continues to be the San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy. While many of the top 2022 NFL Football trading cards continue to get released, a solid variety of Brock Purdy rookie cards are on the market. For example a Brock Purdy 2022 Certfied Rookie Card (Base) has increased from just under a $100 to just over $200. Meanwhile a 2022 Elite Rookie Card (Base) has surged from around $60 in late December to $120 in late January 2023.
Note: Now with the UCL injury, Brock Purdy Rookie Cards may start to cool off.
Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers is in a league of his own right now as he continues to dominate on the ice during the 2022-23 NHL Season. While all hype is around Luka Doncic rookie cards and other Luka Doncic sports cards, another player who continues to be a star in the league is JA Morant. The Memphis Grizzlies star continues to shine night in and night out while being the face of the organization. Since the start of January Morant is averaging 28.2 points per game to go along with 7.6 assists and 3.7 rebounds per game while posting at least eight assists in six games.
While the Jacksonville Jaguars season is officially over, it came in a heart breaking 27-20 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. That said, the growth Trevor Lawrence has shown over the 2022 NFL season including the impressive comeback win against the Los Angeles Chargers in the teams previous playoff matchup continues to showcase his potential. With his play Trevor Lawrence rookie cards have gotten red hot over the past few months of the season.
The 2023 MLB season is just around the corner as teams prepare for the upcoming 2023 MLB Spring Training. With the hype starting to build high expectations are set for the New York Yankees as well as their All-Star MVP outfielder Aaron Judge. With the NFL Playoffs dominating the headlines, Jalen Hurts sports cards continue to be a hot topic among sports card collectors as well as sports card investors.
Could the 2022-23 NBA Season be the season Joel Embiid takes home the NBA MVP Award? It is starting to look that way as the Philadelphia 76ers big man is currently 2nd in the NBA in scoring behind Luka Doncic while also ranking 13th in rebounds, 48th in assists, and 25th in field goal percentage. With potential MVP talks down the road, Embiid basketball cards are seeing some additional love on the sports card marketplaces.
Another NHL star seeing his sports cards rise in fame is the Boston Bruins David Pastrnak who continues to put together a strong season on the ice. The 26 year old right winger of the Bruins is putting together another strong season as the month of January is slowly coming to an end. Entering the final few days of January 2023, Pastrnak has racked up 69 total points while marking the sixth time in his NHL career to post 60 or more points with plenty of time left to top that mark.
